old-fashioned eggnog

I am always craving a glass of cold eggnog around the holidays.  The store bought stuff is delicious, but I wanted to try making my own for once.  I looked through numerous recipes to get an idea of the proportions to use, and came up with this easy recipe that doesn’t require boiling a custard and can be drank right away!

The process of making this Old-Fashioned Eggnog was very similar to the chocolate mousse for the Chocolate Ginger Cupcakes.  I tried whipping the cream and egg whites to very soft peaks to make it easy to drink.  This recipe will serve one or two people as is, but can easily be multiplied to serve more.

ingredients:

  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 1/3 c. confectioners sugar
  • 1/4 c.  heavy cream
  • 1/4 c. bourbon
  • 1 tbs. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg

directions:

  1. Whisk together egg yolks and sugar until mixture is frothy.  Add vanilla extract and continue to mix.  Slowly pour in bourbon, stirring gently to combine, and set mixture aside in refrigerator to keep cool.
  2. In a separate clean, cold bowl beat egg whites with electric mixer until soft peaks begin to form.  Repeat process for whipping cream in another bowl.
  3. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg over the chilled egg yolk mixture.  Gently fold in whipped cream, followed by the egg whites.  Serve immediately, or set in fridge for a couple of hours.  Give the eggnog a good stir before serving.  Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

I served this in a Reidel Stemless Wine Glass to make it really classy, but I enjoy drinking eggnog out of coffee mugs too.
